| Omnistar's Full Review: Ultima Online |
I purchased this game a little over 2 and a half years ago. For the first year, I became extremely addicted- logging on about 3-5 hours per day. Numerous things have changed since then. To those who would choose to join Ultima Online (as a new player) would certainly enjoy these changes.
I will not discuss the past problems, as some of the opinions here have but tell you the benefits UO has as of this day. There used to be no relative safe place for new players to start adventuring without the fear of getting player-killed. However, now the development team has created a "mirror" land of Britannia that is basically suited to help beginner players and those who wish not to lose their accumulated items. Player killing, looting of corpses, and looting of monster kills are now a problem of yesterday. To those that would enjoy player versus player combat, they can always travel back to the "old" lands of Britannia where such rules of conduct are not followed. When you begin the game as a new player, you will automatically be dropped in the "new" lands.
As to the problems of skill accumulation...that has also been fixed for quite some months now. It no longer takes forever to gain a measly .1 in skill. What used to take months, can be accomplished in a few weeks. Skills can even now be set to either go down, stay the same, or go up. Thus enabling a greater control of character development.
To those that wish to fight other players for better challenge than fighting monsters and creatures, the development team will soon be implementing a "factions" system in the "old" lands. This system will allow players to capture towns and literally control them and vie for control. Although this system was promised in the release of Renaissance (an upgrade to Ultima Online) it is just now about ready to be implemented.
Although having played for such a long time, I still consider this game to be well worth the monthly fee required. There are still lag times, but they have improved when compared to the games starting point. Time warps still occur but rarely (varies between shards). The music turns drab quite fast, but the music files can be changed to whichever you like in the directory (you just have to rename your music files to that of UO's) What has kept me going has been the community that the players of Ultima Online has created. Its a great place to meet others and compared to other Online RPGs, is just about the only one that encourages interaction between players.
